Requiring a ring \(R\) to satisfy \(\mathrm{Ext}^i_R(M,R)\neq 0\) for some \(i\geq 0\) for any nonzero finitely generated left \(R\)-module \(M\) is formally stronger than the generalized Nakayama conjecture which postulates the above only for simple modules, yet due to a result \textit{J. P. Jans} [Ill. J. Math. 5, 334--344 (1961; Zbl 0099.02302)] it is weaker than the finitistic dimension conjecture that asserts that the finitistic global dimension of every finite dimensional algebra is finite. The authors call this intermediate condition the strong Nakayama conjecture, SNC for short, and prove that a left noetherian ring \(R\) for which \(R_R\) has an injective resolution with a redundant image (i.e. some image is a finite direct sum of modules that are direct summands of other images) satisfies SNC for left \(R\)-modules. This generalizes a theorem of \textit{Y. Iwanaga} [Commun. Algebra 7, 393--414 (1979; Zbl 0399.16010)] as well as results of Auslander and Reiten and Mueller concerning the generalized Nakayama conjecture.
