On the symmetric square: twisted trace formula (Q1175023)

This paper is concerned with computing the trace formula for \(\text{PGL}(3,k_ \mathbb A)\) with an adjoined outer automorphism \(\sigma\). In other words the author computes the trace of \(r(f)\times \sigma\) on square-integrable functions where \(r\) denotes the usual regular function and \(\sigma\) denotes the map induced by the automorphism of the same name. He also considers simultaneously the groups \(\text{SL}(2)\) and \(\text{PGL}(2)\) as his goal in a series of six papers, of which this is the third, is to analyze the symmetric-square lifting. Under certain conditions, which suffice for the goal he has in view but which are too technical to be repeated here and which involve also certain `matching' functions he computes the trace and brings it into a manageable form for his subsequent needs.
