As an extension of the concept of crossed products of \(C^*\)-algebras by automorphism groups the author defined and analysed the notion of crossed product of a \(C^*\)-algebra \(A\) by a semigroup. A simple example of such crossed products is the Toeplitz algebra. Several interesting results that are quite different from that of the classical case were obtained. For instance, if \((A,\alpha,G)\) is a separable \(C^*\)-dynamical system with \(G\) a discrete abelian group, then the crossed product \(A\times_ \alpha G\) is simple (resp. prime) if and only if \(A\) is \(G\)-simple (resp. prime). But if one supposes that \(G\) is totally ordered by some positive cone \(G^ +\), then it is shown that \(A\times_ \alpha G^ +\) can never be simple if \(G\) is not trivial, and \(A\times_ \alpha G\) is primitive provided only that \(A\) itself is primitive. The conditions were also given for when the crossed product is simple, type I or nuclear, etc. .
