Iterative methods with spectral preconditioning for elliptic equations (Q1175232)

Chebyshev collocation methods for nonseparable elliptic problems are considered. Two preconditioners are designed which correspond to spectral methods for elliptic problems and which are close to the given one but which are separable. (We note that similar ideas previously have been considered for the finite difference case). There is a full analysis of one of the preconditioners and there is also a report on a series of numerical experiments. A comparison is given with finite difference and finite element preconditioners which have been considered previously.
