This is the third in a series of papers by the author [part I, cf. Ann. Math., II. Ser. 130, 643-677 (1989; Zbl 0699.17016); and part II, J. Algebra (to appear)] providing proofs of important steps in the verification of the generalized Kostrikin-Shafarevich Conjecture, which claims that every simple finite-dimensional Lie algebra \(L\) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p>7\) is of either classical or Cartan type. The author and \textit{R. L. Wilson} have announced completion of the final step in this project [Bull. Am. Math. Soc., New Ser. 24, 357-362 (1991; Zbl 0725.17023)]. There is a four-case subdivision based on the root space decomposition of \(L\) with respect to an optimal torus of some \(p\)-envelope of \(L\). A number of structural results are obtained for Case \(A\) (every one-section solvable). The results obtained for Case \(B\) (every one-section solvable or with core \(sl(2)\), and not all of them solvable) ultimately show that in this case \(L\) must be classical simple.
