A construction, based on ordinal sums, of a \(t\)-norm from three other \(t\)-norms and a \(t\)-conorm is given. (A \(t\)-norm is a binary operation on [0,1] which is associative, commutative, non-decreasing in each place, and has 1 as identity. A \(t\)-conorm is a binary operation on [0,1] such that \(1-S(1-x,1-y)\) is a \(t\)-norm.) The construction is accomplished as follows: (1) Let \(T\) be a strict \(t\)-norm and let \(S\) be a strict \(t\)-conorm. For each \(a\), \(b\) in [0,1] define \(a \alpha_ T b=\sup\{x\mid T(a,x)\leq b\}\), \(a \omega_ S b=\inf\{x\mid b\leq S(a,x)\}\). (2) Let \(T_ 1\) and \(T_ 2\) be \(t\)-norms and \(0\leq\lambda\leq 1\). \(U_ 1(a,b)=T(\lambda,T_ 1(\lambda \alpha_ Ta, \lambda \alpha_ Tb))\), for \(a,b\in[0,\lambda]\), \(U_ 2(a,b)=S(\lambda,T_ 2(\lambda \omega_ Sa,\lambda \omega_ Sb))\), for \(a,b\in[\lambda,1]\). (3) Let the new \(t\)-norm be the ordinal sum of \(U_ 1\) and \(U_ 2\).
