The h-vector of a convex polytope in \(R^ d\) determines and is determined by the number of faces. The g-conjecture of McMullen characterizes those vectors which are h-vectors of simplicial convex polytopes. The author gives a proof for the necessity of this condition which is simpler than Stanley's earlier proof.
