Let \((A,m,K)\) be a noetherian local ring which is not a field, and assume that \(A\) contains a field \(k\) with \(\text{char}(k)=p\). Then \(k\) is said to be a quasi-coefficient field of \(A\) if \(K\) is formally etale over \(k\) [cf. \textit{H. Matsumura}, Nagoya Math. J. 68, 123-130 (1977; Zbl 0405.13008)]. The author asks the question of the uniqueness of quasi- coefficient field of \(A\) and other related questions. Main results are the following: (1) If \(p>0\), then \(\bigcap\{A^ q\mid q\) is a power of \(p\)\} is the unique maximal perfect subfield of \(A\). (2) \(A\) has a unique maximal subfield if and only if \(K\) is algebraic over the prime field. (3) \(A\) has a unique maximal quasi-coefficient field if and only if either \(p=0\) and \(K\) is algebraic over \(\mathbb{Q}\), or \(p>0\) and \(K\) is perfect. (4) Any maximal subfield of \(A\) is a quasi-coefficient field if and only if either \(p=0\), or \(p>0\) and \(K\) is algebraic over the prime field.
