We consider a rigorous Hamiltonian perturbation theory based on the transformation of the (Hamiltonian) vector field of the system. The (canonical) transformations leading to the normal form are realized by the Lie method. We shall illustrate the method with reference to two sample problems, which pertain to the well known Nekhoroshev theorem; they allow a simple treatment, and can be compared with the corresponding results obtained by the scalar Lie methods. The first one is a classical problem of perturbation theory, namely the construction of normal forms for a system of \(n\geq 2\) weakly coupled harmonic oscillators. After this, we consider a system which plays an important role, for instance, in the so-called problem of the realization of a holonomic constraint in classical mechanics and is essentially constituted by a (high frequency) harmonic oscillator interacting with an external subsystem.
