Let \(X_ \theta\) be a \(CW\) space which has at most two nontrivial homotopy groups, one of which is the fundamental group. We have the fibration \(K(A,n)\rightarrow X_ \theta\rightarrow K(\pi,1)\) where \(\theta\in H^{n+1}(\pi;A)\) is (essentially) the twisted Postnikov invariant, and \(A\) is the \({\mathbb{Z}}\pi\) module determined by the action of the fundamental group. For the group \({\mathcal E}^*(X_ \theta)\) of pointed homotopy self-equivalence classes we have the exact sequence \(0\rightarrow H^ n(\pi;A)\rightarrow {\mathcal E}^*(X_ \theta)\rightarrow E_ \theta\rightarrow 1,\) where \(E_ \theta\) is the subgroup of \(aut \pi\times aut A\) consisting of pairs \((\alpha,\varphi)\) for which \(\varphi\) is an \(\alpha\)-automorphism. The author gives a new proof of this exact sequence using a Lyndon spectral sequence. His main result is to determine the extension as a factor set in \(H^ 2(E_ \theta;H^ n(\pi;A))\).
