The author gives some examples showing how matrix theory can now in turn profit from the theory of rings and modules. The theory of rings and their representations has been developed in terms of abstractions. On the other hand, information derived by abstract methods can be used to study properties of matrices. The aim in this paper is to survey a few applications. The paper contains sections on canonical forms, the theorems of \textit{W. E. Roth} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 3, 392--396 (1952; Zbl 0047.01901)] and \textit{T. Miyata} [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 7, 65--69 (1967; Zbl 0189.03702)], comfortable rings, arithmetic, and commutative matrix algebras.
