Every closed orientable 3-manifold can be obtained by \(\pm 1\) Dehn surgery on a link \(L\), which consists of some parallel copies of the \(3g- 1\) Lickorish generators for the mapping class group of a standardly embedded closed orientable surface of genus \(g\). The author shows that for \(g\geq 2\), there is a relator in the mapping class group that contains all the Lickorish generators and each with positive exponents. This implies that every closed orientable 3-manifold can be obtained by \(+1\) Dehn surgery only (or \(-1\) Dehn surgery only) on a link \(L\) as above.
