If \((A,\sigma)\) is a Bernstein algebra over a field \(K\) of characteristic \(\neq 2\), then for any idempotent \(e\neq 0\) in \(A\) there is the decomposition \(A=Ke+B\), where the ideal \(B=\hbox{Ker}(\sigma)\). Yu. I. Lyubich has shown that a finite-dimensional Bernstein algebra \(A\) is genetically meaningful if and only if \(B\) is nilpotent; and \textit{A. N. Grishkov} [Sov. Math., Dokl. 35, No. 3, 489-492 (1987); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 194, No. 1, 27-30 (1987; Zbl 0643.17017)] proved that \(B\) is nilpotent if \(A^ 2=A\). In this paper, the author first determines a bound on the index of nilpotency of \(B\), this bound depending on the type of the finite-dimensional Bernstein algebra \(A\). He then extends these results by showing that if \(A\) is a finitely-generated Bernstein algebra with \(A^ 2=A\), then \(B\) is nilpotent. Furthermore, there is a bound on the index of nilpotency of \(B\) which depends on the number of generators for \(A\).
