The author extends the results of \textit{G. Pazderski} on a partial ordering in the set of classes of \(G\)-isomorphic chief factors of a finite soluble group \(G\) [Acta Sci. Math. 51, 163-183 (1987; Zbl 0611.20014)] to an arbitrary finite group with focus on the abelian chief factors. The approach leads to a description of the subgroups in three characteristic series, namely, (1) the series formed through iteration by the generalized Fitting subgroup, (2) the series formed by alternating the soluble radical with the radical associated with groups that coincide with the nonabelian socle, and (3) the dual of (2) in which `radical' is replaced by `residual'. The approach to (1) generalizes that of G. Pazderski and that of (2) is dependent upon building up the nonsoluble chief factors from the nonabelian precrowns. To describe the subgroups in (3), another collection of canonical representatives are introduced. One of the prime movers is the development of a chief factor which in a sense dualizes the concept of a nonabelian precrown. The common thread is that in each case, the subgroups in the characteristic series are the intersection of well-defined classes of subgroups related to a particular class of chief factors. The results are highlighted by a careful presentation which is relatively self-contained.
