Let \(X\) be a locally compact abelian group and let \(H(X)\) be the topological vector space of homogeneous systems \(u^t\), \(t\in\mathbb{R}\), of continuous functions \(u^t: X\to X\) such that \(u^t(x+y)=x+u^t(y)\) for all \(x,y\in X\) and \(t\in\mathbb{R}\). The question of characterization of differentiations in the algebra \(E(X)\) of smooth functions [in the sense of \textit{F. Bruhat}, Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 89, 43--75 (1961; Zbl 0128.35701)] is studied. The author proves that any differentiation \(D\) on \(E(X)\) is of the form \(D\phi=\sum_{i\in I}\xi_i(\partial\varphi/\partial e_y)\), where \(\partial\varphi/\partial e_ i=\lim_{t\to 0}(1/t)(\phi e^t_i-\phi)\) and \(\{\xi_i: i\in I\}\), is a family of functions from \(E(X)\) and \(\{e_i\}_{i\in I}\) is an arbitrary basis (in the sense of Bourbaki) of \(H(X)\).
