The Sinai formula for the entropy of two-dimensional dispersing billiards has the form \(h=\int_{M}\text{tr }B(x)d\mu(x)\), where \(M\) is the phase space, \(\mu\) is the Liouville measure and \(B(x)\) is the curvature operator of the unstable manifold at the point \(x\). The author gives a new proof of this entropy formula, based on the general theory of smooth maps with singularities. Further, the author has proved the following: Let \(T\) denote the derived billiard mapping, generated by the flow \(S^ t\) on ``the boundary phase space'' \(M\), then \(h(T)=\int_{M}\ln\hbox{det}(I+\tau(x)B(x))d\nu(x)\), where \(\tau(x)=\tau_ +(x)\) \((\tau(x)=\tau_{-}(x))\) is first positive (negative) time of the reflection away from boundary and \(\nu\) is an appropriate measure. For the Lorentz gas and Bunimovich stadion the asymptotic behaviour of the entropy is investigated.
