An algebra \(A\) over the ring \(D\) is called a generalized Weyl algebra of degree 1 (GWA) and written \(A=D[x,y;\sigma,a]\) if it is generated over the ring \(D\) by \(x,y\) satisfying the relations: \(x\beta=\sigma(\beta)x\), \(y\beta=\sigma^{-1}(\beta)y\), \(xy=\sigma(a)\), \(yx=a\) where \(\beta,a\in D\), \(\sigma\in\Aut D\). The author considers two examples of such algebras: 1) \(A=K[H](\sigma,a)\), where \(D=K[H]\) is the ring of polynomials in one variable \(H\) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero \(K\), \(\sigma(H)=H-1\); 2) \(B\) is a universal enveloping algebra of a 3-dimensional Heisenberg algebra. He proves that: (1) \(A\) is simple if and only if the polynomial \(a(H)\) has no commensurate roots (otherwise it has only a finite number of two-sided ideals); (2) \(K\)-\(\dim A=1\); (3) if \(C\) is one of the algebras \(A\) and \(B\) then for any integer \(n\geq 0\), the vector spaces \(\text{Ext}_ C^ n(M,N)\), \(\text{Tor}_ n^ A(L,N)\) are finite dimensional, where \(M\), \(N\), \(L\) are simple \(C\)-modules; (4) if \(M\), \(N\) are simple \(B\)-modules then \(\chi(\text{Ext}_ B^*(M,N))=0\).
