This paper deals with the inverse problem of the Newtonian potential that consists in finding a ball-like (i.e. homeomorphic to a closed ball) domain by its Newtonian potential given in a neighbourhood of infinity. Uniqueness results in the case of starlike domains are stated and some examples concerning the non-uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem in the general case are given. Furthermore the author shows how the problem of finding the domain evolution for a time-dependent free-boundary flow in a homogeneous porous medium reduces to the problem of reconstructing a domain from its Newtonian potential. The same results are then proved for the time- dependent free boundary flow in a nonhomogeneous porous medium.
