Let \(A(\lambda)\) be a holomorphic operator-valued function which is defined in some symmetric open neighbourhood \(\mathcal U\) in the complex plane of the real line segment \([a,b]\), and whose values act on a separable Hilbert space \(\mathcal H\). Assume \(A(\cdot)\) is selfadjoint, i.e., \(A(\lambda)^*=A(\bar{\lambda}), \lambda\in {\mathcal U}\). Furthermore, assume that \(A(a)\) and \(A(b)\) are invertible operators, and that \(A(c)\) is compact for some \(c\in (a,b)\). The author shows that in this case the eigenvectors of \(A(\cdot)\) corresponding to the eigenvalues in \((a,b)\) form a Riez basis in their closed span \(\mathcal N\). Furthermore, he shows that the space \(\mathcal N\) has finite defect in \(\mathcal H\) and he provides a formula for this defect number. The results are a further refinement of earlier results in this direction due to \textit{A. S. Markus} and \textit{V. I. Matsaev} [Math. USSR, Sb. 61, No. 2, 289-307 (1988; Zbl 0677.47008)].
