Obituary: Theodor Schneider (1911-1988) (Q1179501)

The obituary starts with a report on the most important stations in the life of the scientist Th. Schneider. Then a review of his scientific contributions to his fields of main interest, transcendental numbers, diophantine approximation and geometry of numbers is given. At the end a reflection follows, how, in the authors' mind, the scientific work of Th. Schneider has influenced the modern development of transcendence theory. In an Erratum [ibid. 41, 129 (1992)] some misprints have been corrected and it is noted that the obituary by \textit{L.-C. Kappe, H. P. Schlickewei}, and \textit{W. Schwarz}, mentioned in the footnote on page 130, has been published in Jahresber. Dtsch. Math.-Ver. 92, No. 3, 111- 129 (1990; Zbl 0702.01011).
