Le formalisme du résultant. (The formalism of resultant) (Q1179937)

This is mainly a modern exposition on the elimination theory and in particular on the resultant. The paper contains all the old and new properties of the resultant as for example the Poisson and Laplace formulas, the divisibility and invariance properties of the resultant etc. -- The Hurwitz proof for the acyclicity of the generic Koszul complex and a study of inertial forms are enclosed. All of them are presented in the language of schemes, local cohomology, spectral sequences etc. It gives applications to some birational questions, the structure of some conductors and many examples, old and new. The paper supports strongly the idea that the elimination theory (in particular the theory of resultant) should not be eliminated since it could be very helpful in the proofs of some geometrical properties, which cannot be obtained using only cohomological tools.
