Let \(\Omega_ n(X,\phi)\) be the \(n\)th normal bordism group of a compact topological space \(X\) with a coefficient \(\phi\in \widetilde{KO} (X)\). Let \(J(\phi): \pi_ 3(SO)\to\Omega_ 3(X,\phi)\) denote a generalized \(J\)-homomorphism and \(j(\phi)\) the order of the finite cyclic group \(\hbox{Im} J(\phi)\). In this paper the author determines the order \(j(k \eta)\), \(k\in \mathbb{Z}\), of the canonical real (or complex) line bundle \(\eta\) over \(\mathbb{R} P^ n\) (or \(\mathbb{C} P^ n\)). As an application, a new proof of the Habegger theorem is given. That is, there exists an oriented 4-manifold \(M\) with even intersection form and signature \(\sigma(M)=8\).
