For immersed closed surfaces \(M\) in 3-space the inequality \(\int_ MH^ 2do\geq 4\pi\) is known, \(H\) denoting the mean curvature of \(M\). The authors give an extension of this inequality to complete noncompact surfaces \(M\) in some sense. They show that, if \(M\) has positive Gaussian curvature outside some compact subset, then this integral does not converge, i.e., \(\int_ MH^ 2do=\infty\).
