In essence the paper is a critical survey of the last-thirty-years publications dealing with the so-called extremal criteria for the stability of certain types of motions. These criteria are analyzed for three classes of dynamical systems --- the weakly connected self- synchronizing objects, the systems with kinematic or dynamic excitation of oscillations and the celestial objects under resonances in their motions. From the methodological point of view the authors succeeded in deriving the earlier obtained stability criteria by means of uniform manner, using the Poincaré-Lyapunov small-parameter method or, under somewhat different assumptions, the method of direct separation of motions. Therefore many of the results established up to the present time are proved anew and given in the form of theorems. References, 46 in number, fully cover the stated problem.
