Let \(2<p<\infty\) and \(w=(w_ n)\) be a sequence of positive real numbers. The space \(X_{p,w}\) is defined as the intersection of \(\ell_ p\) and \(\ell_{2,w}\) with the norm \(\| a\|=\max(\| a\|_ p,| \| a\|_{2,w})\). The Rosenthal space \(X_p\) is \(X_{p,w}\), where \(w\) is such that \[ \sum_{w_ i<\varepsilon} w_ i^{\frac{2p}{p - 2}} =\infty\quad \forall\varepsilon>0. \] \textit{H. P. Rosenthal} [Isr. J. Math. 8, 273--303 (1970; Zbl 0213.19303)] has shown that \(X_p\) ``contains and is contained in isomorphs of \(\ell_ p\oplus\ell_ 2\), but is not isomorphic to a complemented subspace of \(\ell_p\oplus\ell_2\)''. The aim of the paper is to characterize the complemented subspaces of \(X_p\).
