The author generalizes the result of his paper in J. Funct. Anal. 89, No. 1, 154-187 (1990; Zbl 0693.28005) to the case of a complete Riemannian manifold \(M\) with bounded geometry. He studies the behavior of \(e^{t\Delta}(fd\mu)\) as \(t\to 0\) for \(f\in L^ 2(d\mu)\), where \(e^{t\Delta}\) denotes the heat semigroup of \(M\). The measure \(\mu\) is supposed in most cases to be locally uniformly \(\alpha\)-dimensional, that is \(\mu(B_ r(x))\leq cr^ \alpha\) for all \(r\leq 1\) and all \(x\in M\), where \(B_ r(x)\) denotes the ball of radius \(r\) about \(x\). The author estimates lower as well as upper bounds and gives also exact results under additional hypotheses. The basic estimation is the inequality \[ \int h_ t(x,y)d\mu(y)\leq ct^{(\alpha-n)/2} \] for the heat kernel \(h_ t\). In the last section the author shows that for measures \(\mu\) satisfying a condition weaker than local uniform \(\alpha\)-dimensionality, which occurs in the theory of multifractals, similar estimates for \(e^{t\Delta}(fd\mu)\) can be obtained.
