This paper contains a number of results which can be described loosely as having for hypothesis that a certain collection of elements is nilpotent and having for conclusion that what they generate is nilpotent. For example if \(L\) is a finite dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic 0, \(W\) is a (possibly infinite dimensional) \(L\)-module with representation \(\rho\) and \(e_ 1,\ldots,e_ n\) generate \(L\) such that each \(\rho(e_ i)\) is locally nilpotent (nilpotent) then, for all \(x\) in the radical of \(L\), \(\rho(x)\) is locally nilpotent (nilpotent). Furthermore \(W\) is locally finite dimensional. Another result is that if \(L\) is contained in the (possibly infinite dimensional) associative algebra \(A\) with identity and \(L\) has a generating set of associatively nilpotent elements, then the associative envelope (with the identity) is finite dimensional and the ring generated by the radical of \(L\) is nilpotent.
