The paper starts with a historical note which traces the idea of studying a complicated dynamical system through its periodic orbits back to Poincaré. Next, the symbolic dynamics of a Hénon-type map is discussed which provides an example on which the subsequent general theory is worked out. It is then shown how the Fredholm determinant of the transfer operator can be computed by cycle expansions. The paper ends with a list of problems in which a similar approach could be used.
