Let \(G\) be a group whose automorphism group is minimal non-nilpotent (i.e. is not nilpotent, but all proper subgroups are nilpotent). In Theorems 5 and 7 it is shown that if \(G\) is finitely generated, then \(\hbox{Aut}(G)=\hbox{Inn}(G)\) and if, in addition, \(G\) is abelian, then \(G\cong Z_ 2\times Z_ 2\). Moreover, if \(G\) is finite and nonabelian, then \(G\) is minimal non-nilpotent and of order \(2^ mq\) for some odd prime \(q\), and \(\hbox{Aut}(G)\) is minimal nonabelian. An extension of an extraspecial group of order 32 by \(Z_ 5\) is constructed whose automorphism group is minimal non-nilpotent.
