The notion of an admissible tensor category \(\mathcal C\) is considered, and a unified construction of generalized bivariant functors \(KK^ n_ \tau\), \(n\in\mathbb{Z}\), from each category \(\mathcal C\) to the category of Abelian groups is attained. The expected functorial properties of these functors are then in order, and the basic question of the existence of an intersection product is examined under certain restrictions. As special examples of importance, the author recaptures algebraic \(K\)-theory for discrete algebras in the form of Bass, Quillen, or Rosenberg and on the other hand, Kasparov's \(K\)-theory in the \(C^*\)-algebras setting. Further interesting cases arise when \(\mathcal C\) is taken to be various categories of genuine topological algebras.
