Let \(B\) be the Bloch space over the unit disc \(\mathbb{D}\). It is well known that for \(f\in B\) the Nevanlinna characteristic \[ T(r,f)={1\over 2\pi}\int^ \pi_{-\pi}\log^ +| f(re^{it})| dt \] satisfies \[ T(r,f')\leq\log{1\over 1-r}+0(1). \] The author shows that the above estimate is best possible in the class \(B\). Moreover he proves that any function \(g\) in the ``little'' Bloch space satisfies \[ \log{1\over 1-r}- T(r,g')\to\infty,\quad\text{ as } r\to 1. \] The paper contains results of the above type for more general spaces \(X^{s,p}\), \(s>0\), \(0<p\leq\infty\), of those analytic functions \(f\) in \(\mathbb{D}\) for which \[ M_ p(r,f)=o((1-r)^{-s}),\quad \text{ as } r\to 1, \] where \(M_ p(r,f)\) is the standard integral means of \(f\). A particular role in proving that the results are best possible is played by functions with Hadamard gaps.
