It is a well-known result of Rokhlin that under suitable conditions a given endomorphism of a measure space can be lifted to a `natural extension' that is invertible. This result has recently been extended by Silva. But Silva's simplification of Rokhlin's construction is still complicated. The object of the present paper is to give a simpler construction under a mild hypothesis. This construction may lack some of the properties of Rokhlin and Silva's `natural extension'; in particular it does not preserve ergodicity and it is left an open question whether it preserves entropy? The methods taken in the construction require essentially a restriction to Polish spaces with completed, \(\sigma\)- finite measures. Taking the measure-algebraic point of view separability conditions can be relaxed somewhat.
