Let \(K\) be a field which is complete with respect to a discrete valuation. Let \(S\) be a scheme of finite type over \(K\) or an affinoid space over \(K\). Suppose that an abelian scheme \(X\to S\) is such that for every closed point \(s\in S\) the fibre \(X_ s\) is potentially toric. The main result of the paper states that there exists a surjective (finite) étale map \(S'\to S\) such that \(X'=X\times_ SS'\) has an analytic presentation \(\mathbb{G}^ d_{m,S'}/M\) where \(M=\mathbb{Z}^ d_{S'}\) is a constant \(S'\)-subgroup of \(\mathbb{G}^ d_{m,S'}\). A consequence is the following rigidity result: ``If \(S\) is a connected \(K\)-scheme of finite type, then \(X\to S\) is constant in the sense that the map from \(S\) to the coarse moduli space of abelian varieties of dimension \(d\) over \(K\) is constant.'' Some proofs in the paper are rather sketchy.
