It is known that the degree of an irreducible character of a finite group \(G\) does not exceed \(| G: Z(G)|^{1/2}\). A group \(G\) that has an irreducible character of this maximal degree is called a group of central type. A group \(A\) which is isomorphic to \(G/Z(G)\) where \(G\) is of central type is called central type factor group (ctfg for short). In this paper many restrictions on ctfgs are found as well as a local characterization in terms of Sylow subgroups. This characterization strengthens the results of \textit{F. DeMeyer} and \textit{G. Janusz} [Math. Z. 108, 145--153 (1969; Zbl 0169.03502)] in this direction. Further restrictions on normal and subnormal structure of ctfgs are obtained.
