The paper deals with the regularity of the solution of the obstacle problem \(I(u)=\inf\bigl\{\int |\nabla u|^ p dx: u\in K(\psi)\bigr\}\), where \(\psi\in C^ 2(\Omega)\), \(\Omega\subset R^ n\), \(K(\psi)=\{v\in W^{1,p}(\Omega): v\leq \psi\) a.e.\}. The author verifies the regularity of \(u\in C^{1,\alpha}(\Omega)\), if \(\psi\in C^ 2(\Omega)\). This regularity cannot be improved because it is achieved also in the case of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation \(\text{div}(|\nabla u|^{p-1}\nabla u)=0\).
