It is well-known that box spline functions on a three- or four- directional mesh provide an important approximation tool [cf. \textit{C. de Boor, K. Höllig} and \textit{S. Riemenschneider}, Ill. J. Math. 29, 533- 566 (1985; Zbl 0586.41005)] and many numerical methods have been developed to grahically display box spline surface efficiently [see \textit{E. Cohen}, \textit{T. Lyche} and \textit{R. Riesenfeld}, Computer Aided Geom. Des. 1, 131-142 (1984; Zbl 0567.65004); \textit{W. Dahmen} and \textit{C. A. Micchelli}, Comp. Aided Geom. Des. 1, 115-129 (1984; Zbl 0581.65011) and 2, 77-85 (1985; Zbl 0576.65138)]. The author highlights the advantages in finding the \(B\)-nets of box splines and, using some earlier results shows that the \(B\)-net of the polynomial pieces of a box spline on a three- or a four-directional directed mesh consists of rational numbers. An algorithm to compute the \(B\)-nets of bivariate box splines on a three- or four-directional mesh is described and two pseudo Fortran programs for those \(B\)-nets are given.
