The subnormalizer of a subgroup \(H\) of a group \(G\) is the set \(S(H)=\{g\in G:\;H\triangleleft\triangleleft\langle H,g\rangle\}\). The author considers the case for \(H\) a \(p\)-subgroup of a finite group \(G\) and proves that \(| S(H)|=\alpha(H)\cdot| N(H)| =\lambda(H)\cdot| N(B)|\) where \(B\) is a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\), \(\alpha(H)\) is the number of distinct conjugates of \(H\) contained in one Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\), \(\lambda(H)\) is the number of Sylow \(p\)- subgroups of \(G\) which contain \(H\) and \(N( )\) denotes the normalizer in \(G\). The author earlier proved a special case of the result, for \(p\)- solvable \(G\), using group-theoretic methods. The proof of the general case is more combinatorial in nature, involving the Möbius function and Möbius inversion formula on the partially ordered set of \(p\)-subgroups of \(G\).
