This paper aims at developing localisation theorems for algebraic \(K\)- theory in certain non-commutative situations. Most of the paper consists of the construction of algebraic \(K\)-theory for ``admissible abelian categories''; these are abelian categories with additional structure. Examples are the category of left modules over a ring \(R\) together with central elements \(t_ 1,\dots,t_ n\) such that \(R=Rt_ 1+\dots+Rt_ n\); or the category of quasi-coherent sheaves of \({\mathcal O}_ X\)-modules over a scheme \(X\) together with an ample family of line bundles. The main results are the Bass fundamental theorem, excision, the projective line bundle theorem, localisation, and Mayer-Vietoris. There are two applications. The first is a localisation theorem relating the \(K\)-theory of a ring \(R\) to the \(K\)-theory of the rings \(R[t^{-1}_{i(1)}\dots t^{-1}_{i(k)}]\) for a suitable family of elements \(t_ 1,\dots,t_ n\) in \(R\). The second says that the \(K\)-theory of a smooth variety \(X\) over a field is the same as that of the sheaf of germs of differential operators on \(X\).
