The main purpose of this paper is to consider some topological conditions for a Kähler-Einstein surface of general type to have negative holomorphic sectional curvature or negative sectional curvature. The author has proved if \(M\) is a Kähler-Einstein surface of negative Ricci curvature satisfying the inequality \(3\gamma_ 2\omega-\gamma^ 2_ 1\omega < k\gamma^ 2_ 1\omega\), everywhere, where \(k<1/8\), then it has negative sectional curvature (\(\gamma_ 2\omega\) and \(\gamma^ 2_ 1\omega\) are Chern forms). By using Hirzebruch's examples [\textit{F. Hirzebruch}, Math. Ann. 266, 351-356 (1984; Zbl 0504.14030)] it is given the negative answer to the following question: Let \(X\) be a compact surface with negative first Chern class \((C_ 1(X)<0)\), and \([3c_ 2(X)-c^ 2_ 1(X)]/c^ 2_ 1(X)\) is small enough. Does \(X\) have a hermitian metric with negative holomorphic sectional curvature, or maybe even negative sectional curvature? \(c_ 2(X)\), \(c^ 2_ 1(X)\) are Chern numbers. Moreover, since the Chern numbers are just the \(L_ 1\)- norms of the Chern forms and since the fact, that the \(L_ 1\)-norm goes to zero, does not give us any information on the curvature, the author tries to look at the \(L_ 2\)-norm instead. He obtains some results for a Kähler-Einstein space.
