In studying stochastic models for the spread of disease, a basic parameter is the reproduction ratio \(R\), being the expected number of secondary cases caused by one infected individual in a sea of susceptibles. It is shown how \(R\) may be calculated when the number of recognizable disease states is finite and the phenomena of pair formation and separation are taken into account.
