Given an \(n\)-graded vector space \(V\) (with multidegree in \(\mathbb{Z}^ n\)), the authors construct an \((n+1)\)-graded Lie algebra structure on the space \(M(V)\) of all multilinear mappings from some \(V\times\dots\times V\) into \(V\). Then a bilinear map \(\mu\) on \(V\), of weight 0, defines an \(n\)- graded associative multiplication on \(V\) if and only if the \(M(V)\)- bracket \([\mu,\mu]\) vanishes. Similarly, \(n\)-graded Lie algebra structures on \(V\) are characterized by a vanishing bracket condition in the \((n+1)\)-graded Nijenhuis-Richardson algebra \(A(V)\), image in \(M(V)\) of a multigraded alternator. The paper also explains a similar result for multigraded bimodule structures, a universal property of the algebra \(A(V)\), and Hochschild or Chevalley cohomology in this framework. The last section gives general results on the equivalence of formal deformations of structures.
