Let \(I_ 1,\ldots,I_ g\) be ideals of positive height in the local Noetherian ring \((R,{\mathfrak m})\) and let \(S\) denote the multigraded Rees ring \(R[I_ 1T_ 1,\ldots,I_ gT_ g]\). For an \({\mathfrak m}\)-primary ideal \(I_ 0\) let \(I\) be the ideal \((I_ 0,I_ 1T_ 1,\ldots,I_ gT_ g)\) of \(S\). --- In the first part of the paper, the author proves a formula for the multiplicity of \(I\) in terms of the mixed multiplicities of \(I_ 0,\ldots,I_ g\). This formula is used in the second part to characterize when the Rees ring has minimal multiplicity. --- Recall that for a Cohen-Macaulay ring \(R\) the multiplicity \(e\) is always bounded by \(\text{emdim} R-\dim R+1\), and that \(R\) is said to be of minimal multiplicity if equality holds. With this notation the author gives the following generalization of a result of Goto and Shimoda: if \(R\) is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension 2 and \(S:=R[{\mathfrak m}^{q_ 1}T_ 1,\ldots,{\mathfrak m}^{q_ g}T_ g]\), \(1\leq j\leq g\), then \(R\) has minimal multiplicity iff \(S_{\mathfrak n}\) is Cohen-Macaulay of minimal multiplicity, where \({\mathfrak n}\) is the maximal ideal of \(S\).
