In [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 69, No. 1, 1-19 (1990; Zbl 0727.13007)], \textit{D. D. Anderson} and \textit{M. Zafrullah}, and the reviewer studied various factorization properties in integral domains which are weaker than unique factorization. They introduced several finiteness conditions concerning the factorization of elements into products of irreducibles. This paper studies these problems in the more general context of commutative cancellative monoids, with applications to the multiplicative monoid of nonzero elements of an integral domain. Criteria are given for a Noetherian domain to be either a bounded factorization domain or a finite factorization domain.
