The equations for large deflections of plates (von Kármán equations) and for shallow shells (Marguerre's equations) are deduced in the situation when the transverse shear effect is included. To derive the equations, the author simplifies the variational equation for Hamilton's principle on base of the assumption that the rotations are much larger than the linear strains, i.e. \(\varepsilon_{ij}=e_{ij}+(1/2)\omega_{ki}\omega_{kj}\). Such a simplification is no more a true variational equation (so called pseudo- variational equation), but it can still be used for the deduction of plate and shallow shell equations.
