Poisson's equation in a three-dimensional field-effect transistor structure is solved numerically, using the ``finite strip'' method. By means of the fast Fourier transform, the 3D structure is decomposed into a series of 2D problems, which are solved by a direct method based on cyclic reduction ( FACR algorithm). Numerical results and comparisons of 2D and 3D computations are given. The authors foresee another advantage of the decomposition mentioned, namely solving the 2D problems in parallel.
