The Riemann problem is studied for a system of conservation laws with a strongly convex entropy. It is established that in an arbitrary number of dimensions the problem can be reduced to the solution of an infinite number of entropy inequalities. This approach is used to study wave curves in connection with an initial boundary value problem, and to study certain maximum principles and the uniqueness problem for a trivial Riemann problem.
