The \textit{J. Totafurno} and \textit{L. E. H. Trainor} [J. theor. Biol. 124, 415-454 (1987)] model of supernumerary limb production in salamanders is re-examined using symmetry analysis. It is shown that the appearance of field solutions possessing 2 and 4 singularities also corresponds to the true bifurcations with reduced symmetries, just as had been previously found for a solution to the field equations not possessing such singularities (the twist solution). The relationship between the solutions of nonlinear equations and the corresponding linear equations is also discussed.
