The Bessel function series is \(S(\theta)=J_ k(k)+2\sum_{n=1}^ \infty J_{n+k}(2n\cos\theta)\) where \(0\leq\theta\leq\pi\) and \(k=i\lambda\) with real \(\lambda\to \infty\). The obtained asymptotic expansion holds uniformly with respect to \(\theta\). The expansion is obtained by the method of steepest descent applied to a contour integral representation for \(S(\theta)\). The asymptotic feature is a second order saddle point near a pole of the integrand. The uniform expansion shows a new special function given by \(G(z)=3/(2\pi i)\int_{\infty\exp(-\pi i/3)}^ {\infty\exp(\pi i/3)}e^{t^ 3} dt/(t-z)\). Several properties of this function are given. The result is used to establish the high-frequency asymptotics of the linear current density on a thin conducting strip that is part of the transmission line.
