Let \(D\) be a domain in \(\mathbb{R}^ N\), and let \(\Gamma\) be an open subset of \(\partial D\) (an initial surface). Let \(L\) be a (possibly nonlinear) elliptic operator in \(D\). Let \(u\) be a solution of \(Lu=0\) in \(D\). The unique continuation property for the Cauchy problem for \(L\) asserts that if the initial data vanish on \(\Gamma\), then \(u=0\) in \(U\cap D\), where \(U\) is an open neighborhood of an interior point of \(\Gamma\). When \(N=2\), the unique continuation property is known to hold under certain conditions. For \(N\geq 3\), the author gives a partial affirmative answer to the question whether it holds for degenerate quasilinear elliptic operators.
