An \(m\times n\) matrix is weak-monotone if, for every \(x\in \mathbb{R}^ n\) such that \(Mx\geq 0\), there exists \(y\in \mathbb{R}^ n_ +\) satisfying \(Mx=My\). It is shown that a matrix allowing a generalized \(B\)-splitting is weak-monotone iff the associated spectral radius is less than one. It is then shown that weak-monotone matrices allow a generalized \(B\)- splitting. The notion of generalized \(B\)-splitting follows that of \(B\)-splitting for square matrices in earlier work of the first author [A new characterization of inverse positive matrices, ibid. 154-156, 45-58 (1991; Zbl 0734.15008)].
